Ātea a Rangi/Star Compass

The Ātea a Rangi is a celestial star compass based on a traditional Pacific Island concept to  teach traditional navigation. The Ātea a Rangi Educational Trust (Ātea Trust) is a registered Charitable Trust. The Ātea Trust was established to run educational programmes, events and tours based on traditional Māori and environmental kaupapa. Our vision - to gather and pass on traditional  knowledge within Aotearoa and Te Moana nui a Kiwa. Contact us to learn more about the Ātea a Rangi from the team of navigators, waka sailors and carvers who designed, carved and completed the Atea a  Rangi/star compass site.

This fascinating and raw tour of New Zealand's oldest Prison will take you on a historic journey through the undulating corridors which survived the 1931 Napier Earthquake. The corridors are twisted and walls misshapen. In this audio tour you'll learn about some of the most terrifying prisoners including drug barons and mass murderers and an infamous "Eye Eater". Check out the graffiti on the prisoner's bed bases and hear how toothpaste had multiple uses for incarcerated criminals. You will hear tales about villains, victims and heroes.

Te Matau a Māui Voyaging Trust

Discover Hawke’s Bay aboard ‘Te Matau a Māui’’, a traditional Polynesian sailing waka (canoe), that has travelled across the world.  Enjoy the hospitality and warmth of a friendly crew as they share their passion for sailing with you. Hear stories of Polynesian migration and local Māori history and legend. Learn how their ancestors navigated by the stars and how they continue this tradition today. Sailing occurs from October through March (weather dependent). Delicious Māori cuisine also included.  Two hour sailing departing West Quay, Ahuriri, Napier.
