Whirinaki Forest Guided Day and Night Walks are led by local guides, exploring Māori culture and traditions within Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Forest. Visitors experience hāngī-style kai served in rourou in the forest and hear knowledge shared from ancestors through to present-day descendants. The walks include learning about native trees and plants with health benefits from local knowledge holders and visiting canyons and waterfalls that hold significance to Ngāti Whare.
The Night Walk returns visitors to the forest to glimpse native bats flying overhead, listen for the calls of the native New Zealand kiwi and other species, and observe glow worms within the Whirinaki Forest sanctuary.
